Cathartic Cuteness

Well, I don't know about you guys, but I am pretty bummed over recent events. The Preds being sold (and all the surrounding turmoil), several friends moving away, the sky filling with smoky haze sent from Georgia . . .

So here are a couple of stories so incredibly cute that they are bound to wash away some of that gloom. At least, they helped me. A little bit.

Boy Finds Royal PenPal
A 4-year-old boy in Britain released a helium balloon with a message attached in the hopes of finding a foreign pen pal. Rather than flying to a distant land, however, the balloon landed in a garden at Windsor Castle . . .

Bird Befriends Baby Tigers
Two four-day-old tigers in China have found a friend in a baby crane. The bird keeps watch over the tiger cubs as they sleep and plays with them when they wake up.

Purses for Africa!

Okay, so my title is a little tongue-in-cheek, but this is a great event.

Check it out:

It's in the Bag
Second Annual bags for blood: water mission Sale
Totes, purses, handbags, backpacks, etc.

The sale is this Saturday, June 2, from 9am until 2pm in East Nashville. All proceeds go to provide clean drinking water in Africa.

For more information, visit the It's in the Bag info site.

The organizers of this awesomeness have been collecting donations of purses and bags all year, so the sale is sure to be a treasure trove of accessories. Last year I found an amazing purse for $4!

Grumpy Smurf

Today is a grumpy, gray-cloud day.

The Predators are being sold, and I am worried that the team will be moved. And there is nothing I can do about that.

Additionally, the site for my store isn't working. I can't get the checkout process to cooperate. Gr. I am extra-grumpy because I stayed up late last night trying to fix it. Still no word from tech support, either.

Plus, I need to clean out the cat litter.

Oddly Appropriate Sponsorship

Does anyone else think it's kinda funny that Pop Tarts is sponsoring the American Idols concert tour?

I truly do not mean to imply anything sketchy about the Idol finalists themselves...I enjoy watching the show occasionally and am not going to pass judgment on the contestants.

It's just.....funny.

Sommet Group Buys Nashville Arena Naming Rights

The Sommet Group, who sponsored the Nashville Predators' post-season run, has bought the naming rights to the Nashville Arena.

I think this will do very good things for Sommet. For one thing, I had never heard of them until they sponsored the Preds. Now I know that their name is pronounced "Some-ay" and that they offer payroll processing and HR services.

I'm very happy for the Preds, too. They already have the best fans in the world, but they needed some local business support as well.

According to the Tennessean article, signs on the building formerly known as the Nashville Arena will change today.

Peas Incorporated

A few days ago I made a startling discovery about one of my childhood heroes.

Did you ever watch Kids Incorporated? It was a light-hearted show about kids who sang at a club called The Place. No, the premise didn't make a whole lot of sense, but I loved that show. I watched it on The Disney Channel whenever I could.

My favorite character on the show was Stacy. She had the coolest hair -- it was blond and curly, like mine, and she usually had it in this rad side ponytail (alas, my hair was too short for that). Sometimes her hair even was crimped.

Stacey wore lots of bangle bracelets, baggy shirts, and gargantuan earrings. As a 7-year-old, I saw her as the ultimate in style.

So, the other day, I found out that Stacy from Kids Incorporated now is Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas! I had no idea! I had seen Fergie, but my mind never made the connection, and I remained blissfully ignorant until I stumbled across Stacy/Fergie's Wikipedia page. (Those of you who already knew this are laughing at me now.)

I couldn't believe it. Ghetto-fabulous Fergie is the current form of my 80s hero?

You can see the resemblance, a little bit:

Lions, Tigers, and Money, Oh my

So last night, husband was looking at Quicken and checking our budget. He was updating me on our financial status, and I started to get fairly stressed.

I have some ... issues ... with anxiety, and money is a big trigger for me. Whether we have $4 or $4 million, I worry about whether we have enough to make ends meet and whether we are spending the money responsibly.

So I mentioned to hubby that it is best for me not to talk about money before bedtime, lest I start to worry so much that I have trouble sleeping. "Actually," I told him, "I can't think about money, hell, or aliens before I go to bed."

He just looks at me and says, "The aliens say we have to give them money or we'll go to hell."

Sigh. I think he was mocking me.

As if that weren't enough, tonight he showed me a picture of a UFO over Nashville.

Normally he would dismiss it as a lens flare, but since he couldn't find the light source causing the flare, he decided it was a UFO.

If I have nightmares tonight, I totally am going to blame him. Last night I dreamt that Nashville was hit by an earthquake. Of course, I also dreamed that we got another puppy . . .

Funny, Odd, and Slightly Disturbing

Wishful Thinking

I wish the rain hadn't started right as I was going to take Cameron to the dog park.

I wish I had been ready to open my store for Mother's Day (so that everyone could buy gifts for their moms from me!).

I wish I had something more interesting to post when NashvilleIsTalking linked to my blog.

I wish the window sills in my house were wider so that the cat could sit on them and look out the windows. Kitties on window sills are a necessary part of a balanced cute diet.

10 Reasons I Love My 'Hood

10. Despite being located in land-locked Nashville, Tennessee, tonight I saw an old "Woodie" driving around the neighborhood, complete with surf boards tied to the roof. I wonder if Percy Priest Lake offers some good waves?

9. An owl lives in my back yard.

8. We have a dog park.

7. We have several people parks, including one with a state-of-the-art community center.

6. I'm pretty sure we have more Volkswagens per capita than any other place in the state.

5. Cottage -style bungalows? Check.
Ranch homes? Check.
Antebellum plantation homes? Check.
Vintage stucco homes that look like mini-Hollywood piazzas? Check.

4. I can walk to the corner store and grab a gallon of milk (it's a long walk, but hey, I can do it).

3. See that guy with the tattoos and piercings, picking up trash on the side of the road? No, he's not serving jail time...he's the president of his neighborhood association, and they're sponsoring a community clean-up day.

2. The local restaurant management worries about us if we miss watching a Preds game at their bar.

1. We're the crunkest 'hood in town!

The Importance of Being Girly

Sometimes I find it important to pamper my inner princess.

Call me shallow if you want, but the occasional luxury of new lip gloss or sparkly fingernail polish really can make my day. A few weeks ago, my mom gave me a treasure -- bright pink lip gloss that came in a Clinique bonus gift set. Today I splurged and bought a shiny, black headband at Old Navy (headbands are back in style -- isn't that weird?).

The pampering isn't limited to buying stuff. Reading a novel, painting my toenails, even playing my bass (punk princess!) . . . there are many paths to pampering.

I think that all of these little luxuries are symbols to me that I have worth. Glittery, girly acts of self-care are love notes to my soul. They are reminders that Someone created me, and that He loves me very much. Despite my failures and character defects, my many imperfections, my powerlessness over so much in my life, I know I am not on my own.

Song in My Head

Remember the old "After Dark" screensaver program?
Remember the flying toasters on the Mac version?

I have the flying toaster theme song in my head.

I dedicate this song in my head to my yearbook staff buddies who heard waaaaay too much of that anthem.

My Week without TV

This week I have vowed not to watch TV.

I have quite the history as a TV addict. Growing up as a latchkey kid, I always watched TV when I got home from school. At night I would watch reruns of decades-old shows like Get Smart and The Dick van Dyke Show with my dad. In college I stayed up late to watch MacGyver in syndication, since I missed the show the first time around.

I really like television. I like knowing what is going on in the world, and I like the communal experience of watching something that several thousand other people also are watching simultaneously. Sometimes, though, my TV-watching habits become too important to me. When I start planning my day around Malcolm in the Middle reruns, things have gone too far.

So, I haven't been super-extra productive without my TV time, but this has been a nice break. Most of the time I don't miss the shows.

Tonight has been kinda hard, though. I find myself itching to go upstairs and turn on the television. I think that's because Paul and I have a bit of a Wednesday night habit -- he plays video games or works on his Flickr account, while I watch Criminal Minds and (usually) crochet.
